It is with great sadness that we announce the death of William Brough. William was a very enthusiastic member of the ALSGBI; he contributed greatly in the early development of Laparoscopic Surgery in this country, particularly in the operations of Laparoscopic Nissan Fundoplication and Laparoscopic Hernia repairs. This was in the early 1990’s at a time when the only instruments available were gynaecological ones.
William had tremendous enthusiasm and boundless energy, he demonstrated and mentored colleagues in numerous hospitals throughout the UK , thus helping to spread the interest in and uptake of Laparoscopic Surgery. He was a lecturer and demonstrator on many Laparoscopic courses in the UK and overseas. William started his consultant career at Stebbing Hill hospital in Stockport later moving to Macclesfield hospital. In 2015 he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease which sadly progressed rapidly leading to his death in July 2021.
A service of Celebration and Thanksgiving was held at St James parish church Sutton was held on 6th August 2021. Very moving eulogies were given by his wife Sylvia and his surgical colleague at Macclesfield, Sam Quayle.
