Dr. Kelvin Higa graduated from the University of California Los Angeles School of Medicine in 1983. He is board-certified in General Surgery and is currently CEO of Advanced Laparoscopic Surgery Associates and serves as Director of Minimally Invasive and Bariatric Surgery for the Fresno Heart and Surgical Hospital and as Medical Director for Diabetic System Planning for Community Medical Centers. He is Co-director for the MIS/Bariatric fellowship program and holds the academic appointment of Professor of Surgery teaching residents in the University of California San Francisco – Fresno Program.
His main interests include Bariatric/Metabolic Surgery and advanced laparoscopic Techniques. He has published extensively in this area and serves on the editorial boards of several journals. He has served as President of the American Society for Metabolic and Surgery as well as President of the International Federation for Surgery and Metabolic Disorders. He is recipient of the ASMBS Lifetime Achievement Award and recently, the ASMBS LEAD award for Excellence in Critical Care.
Dr. Kelvin Higa continues to practise general as well as Metabolic surgery. With more than 25 years of experience and over 10,000 primary and revisional bariatric procedures, he continues to travel, lecture, teach and serves as a mentor to many new surgeons interested in this specialty. He continues to advocate for the patients with obesity and metabolic syndrome and to educate against bias, prejudice and lack of access to evidence-based care they deserve.
