Professor Chelliah R. Selvasekar is a Consultant Colorectal, Laparoscopic, and Robotic Surgeon specialising in the management of colorectal cancer. His expertise includes screening colonoscopy, minimally invasive surgery, and complex cancer management.
Commonly known as Sekar, he earned his medical degree from Madras Medical College in India and completed both basic and higher surgical training in the UK. He conducted clinical research on minimally invasive treatments for dysplastic lesions at University College London for two years, leading to a Doctor of Medicine from the University of London. Additionally, he spent a year as an International Clinical Colorectal Fellow at the prestigious Mayo Clinic, Minnesota, USA, where he honed his skills in minimally invasive and complex colorectal surgery.
Selvasekar is an Honorary Clinical Professor at the Faculty of Health, Social Care, and Medicine at Edge Hill University and an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Manchester. He played a pivotal role in establishing laparoscopic colorectal surgery and an enhanced recovery program at both Leighton Hospital and Christie NHS Foundation Trust. His contributions have been acknowledged by the Association of Laparoscopic Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland (ALSGBI), which recognised him as a national preceptor. The ALSGBI is the UK’s premier professional Association in the fields of Laparoscopic and Robotic surgery, and promotes surgical training with the ultimate goal of improving patient care. Selvasekar has also served as a national trainer in minimally invasive surgery within the Lapco program.
In addition, he established a robotic colorectal service at Christie NHS Foundation Trust, focusing on the management of complex colorectal cancer. He is the director of the Manchester Surgical Skills and Simulation Centre.
Dedicated to surgical training, Professor Selvasekar holds a master’s degree in clinical education. He is actively involved in various educational and examination roles at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and will join the RCSEd Council from 2024 to 2029. He aims to standardise surgical training through global collaboration and partnerships, ensuring high-quality surgical care.
Selvasekar is grateful to the ALSGBI Council for electing him as President for a two-year term starting in 2025. He prioritises sustainable, skill-based surgical training that is affordable and equitable
