HAROLD HOPKINS SYMPOSIUM
June 7, 2018
This meeting is an opportunity to appreciate the work of Professor Harold Hopkins FRS – a remarkable optical physicist whose work changed the world wide practice of surgery and medicine.
Prior to 1959, the optics of the traditional cystoscope were dreadful. After being approached by a Urologist wanting better illumination, Hopkins improved the light transmission 80 fold by developing the Rod Lens, transforming the image quality and opening the door to all minimally invasive short stay surgery.
Also responsible for introducing the CVD reader, Hopkins published the first coherent image transmitted through a fibreoptic bundle, paving the way for the development of diagnostic and therapeutic fibre optic endoscopy.
Book a place at this free event to learn about Hopkins’ contribution to medicine. You’ll explore the history and evolution of the instruments that are now used routinely in the most intricate of operations. Click here for more information.
