ALSGBI SW CHAPTER MEETING
FRIDAY 14TH JULY 2017 | 6 HOURS CPD
Current issues with training and assessment for laparoscopic surgery
Since its origins in the 1980s, the laparoscopic approach has spread to all surgical specialties, with an ever increasing list of procedures, novel instrumentation and techniques. Alongside the need to ensure that these developments are adopted in a safe and reliable manner, the challenge for surgical staff to keep up to date can seem insurmountable.
Countless studies have recommended the use of box trainers, virtual reality simulators and cadaveric models but the access to such facilities is very variable. Financial pressures within the NHS are having a significant impact on the provision of training facilities, the funding of courses and availability of staff to cover study leave. Healthcare companies are also feeling the pinch and the impact of more stringent regulation on their financial support for education and training is adding to the pressure.
How can we meet these challenges for surgeons and allied staff who need to provide a safe and effective laparoscopic surgical service in the future? What is the future for technology enhanced learning for laparoscopy and how can we improve expert coaching in the clinical setting? We hope to discuss and debate these issues at this meeting – please join us and share your views.
Also at this event, we will be offering core surgical trainees the opportunity of hands on practice for the LapPass skills, with assessment stations available so that individuals can work towards their Laparoscopic Passport.
